new treatment passes global and china standards

Yap said Beijing's move would further strengthen existing bilateral ties between the two countries. "Our exporters have fully complied with the requirements for extended hot water treatment as specified last year by inspectors and technical staff from AQSIQ," Yap said. "Beijing's nod to the treatment facilities set up by our mango exporters is very timely because this is now the peak of the mango harvest season."

Puyat said Beijing gave the go-ahead after officials from its General Administration for Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine (AQSIQ) visited Manila last month to check on food safety and treatment facilities for Philippine mango exports. "Our mango exporters want to relay their thanks to the Chinese quarantine officials for recognizing the efforts that they have done to make treatment facilities for Philippine mangoes at par with international sanitary and phytosanitary standards," Puyat said.

    storm on the oil market

Oil prices rose to above US$117 a barrel in Asia Wednesday on concerns that Tropical Storm Gustav may disrupt operations in the Gulf of Mexico, home to a quarter of U.S. crude production.

Gustav roared ashore on Haiti Tuesday near the city of Jacmel as a hurricane with top sustained winds near 90 mph (145 kph). The National Hurricane Center said the storm's winds dropped from hurricane-strength to 60 mph (95 kph) Wednesday. But the storm's expected to get stronger later this week.

A powerful storm in the Gulf could force shutdowns on the offshore rigs that account for about a quarter of U.S. crude production and much of its natural gas. Royal Dutch Shell PLC said it could begin evacuating workers as soon as Wednesday.

Still, evidence of falling U.S. oil demand is keeping a lid on prices. The U.S. Energy Department's Energy Information Administration said Tuesday that year-over-year oil demand was down 5.6 percent in June.

On the foreign exchange market, the European single currency slumped to a six-month low of 1.4571 dollars, a level last seen in February, after the release of the data in the eurozone's biggest economy.
Investors will want to see if the German Ifo survey of business sentiment shows whether the euro zone economy is weakening further, a factor that has been behind dollar gains recently.

Also supportive were tensions between the West and Russia over Georgia and expectations that oil exporter group OPEC, which meets on September 9, could trim production should prices fall further.
World oil prices rose slightly in Asia on Tuesday in a market torn between fears of falling demand and worries that Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) might cut production, analysts said.

"What we're seeing is people are afraid that if it goes much lower, OPEC might do something to keep it up," said David Johnson, an oil analyst with Macquarie Securities in Hong Kong.

OPEC may decide to cut the cartel's oil output quota in the face of falling crude prices, energy consultancy CGES said last week.

OPEC member Venezuela also said it would ask the cartel, which produces about 40 percent of the world's oil, to cut production at its September meeting if downward price pressure continues.

"I think overall the trend of the market is bearish right now, but the hurricane premium as well as the Russia-NATO premium is what's keeping the market from dropping further," said Jonathan Kornafel, Asia director at U.S.-based options trader Hudson Capital Energy.
    news in short oil production

STAVANGER, Norway, Aug 26 (Reuters) - Italian energy group Eni  said it plans to pick this year a floating production vessel for its Goliat oil discovery, one of the biggest finds in the Norwegian Barents Sea. In April, Eni said that Goliat, slated to start production in 2012, would cost at least $5 billion to develop and would produce 100,000 barrels per day.
Goliat is set to be the second offshore development in the Barents Sea after StatoilHydro's Snoehvit gas field.

Genesis announces  that the SEDCO 704 semi-submersible drilling rig has arrived on site in UKCS Block 9/5b and has commenced operations.
The Company has contracted AGR Peak Well Management to undertake the complete well services project including the provision of the drilling rig.
Speaking for Genesis, Gerry Harrison, Chief Executive, said, “We are very pleased to be the Operator on our first well and excited about the potential hydrocarbon accumulations. Although the Genesis team has been particularly focused on the 9/5b project, the Company has also been working on a number of other prospects both in the UK and Norway that we intend to drill in the future. We have an excellent portfolio and very competent partners and expect to announce additional drilling plans during the next quarter.”

New Delhi, Aug 25 (IANS) State-run hydrocarbon major Oil and Natural Gas Corp (ONGC) Monday said its board has approved spending Rs.4.5 billion ($104.65 million) to enhance its exploration and production capabilities. The board has approved refurbishing its offshore drilling rig Sagar Ratna at a cost of Rs.4.2 billion. The repair work will be carried out by Hindustan Shipyard Ltd.
The board has also approved a proposal to hire a consultant through international bidding for acquiring or constructing a floating production and storage offloading (FPSO) vessel at a cost of Rs.268 million.

CAIRN ENERGY, the Edinburgh-based oil exploration firm, is shipping two drilling rigs from Texas in a $100 million (£54m) contract as it prepares to start extracting its discoveries in the Thar desert in the Indian state of Rajasthan later this year.
Analysts also expect a progress report on Cairn's construction of a pipeline in Rajasthan and the size of any additional finds, as well as updates on exploration activities in Bangladesh and Tunisia.
Production will start first at the Mangala field, the biggest of the MBA fields, with a view to extracting the first barrels of oil in the second half of next year. Cairn, the fifth-largest listed company in Scotland by market capitalisation, has forecast that it will hit peak production of 175,000 barrels per day of oil equivalent, the standard industry term for oil and other hydrocarbons, by 2010.

Nearly 40 years after a disastrous oil spill off Santa Barbara, Calif., galvanized the nation and gave birth to the modern environmental movement, the Santa Barbara County Board of Supervisors is poised to vote Tuesday in support of offshore drilling.
Proponents of the measure contend that the United States cannot turn away from a homegrown energy source at a time when the country is dangerously dependent on foreign oil and when technology has made offshore drilling safer than ever.
The vote is largely symbolic - the supervisors have no power to approve new offshore drilling, and the governor has come out against it.

Announcement of new Aboriginal contracting business - Doorn-Djil Yoordaning

Macmahon Holdings Limited announced the formation of an Aboriginal contracting business - Doorn-Djil Yoordaning Mining and Construction (Doorn-Djil).

The name of the new company is taken from the Noongar Balladong language of Western Australia (translated as 'coming together') and represents a special opportunity for a business to work with many different local Aboriginal communities to create a new player in the Australian contracting sector.

Macmahon chief financial officer Ross Carroll, believes the new company provides an exciting opportunity that aligns perfectly with the Group's growth strategy.

"The decision to create a new company is the result of the considerable effort and success Macmahon has had in encouraging Aboriginal participation in the workforce during the past 40 years," he said.

"Doorn-Djil will be an integral part of our growth strategy. Macmahon traditionally operates in areas with a high Aboriginal population and Doorn-Djil will provide a vehicle for tapping into a potential workforce that has been under utilised.

"We expect Doorn-Djil will become a significant employer of Aborigines and a commercially viable business very quickly," Mr Carroll said.

The newly appointed general manager of Doorn-Djil, Tony Noonan, said the new company would initially target mining and infrastructure construction contracts and would focus on meeting the needs of private and government customers around the country.

"Our aim is to deliver a competitive and high quality service to customers while maximising opportunities for Aboriginal workers, their families and communities," he said.

"The mining and construction industry is clamouring for manpower and we see huge benefits in helping to fill this need in a way that enables Aboriginal communities and individuals to share in the rewards.

"Doorn-Djil's biggest challenge will be bridging the cultural gap between employers and communities, as well as investing in programs that will deliver a skilled, work-ready Aboriginal workforce," Mr Noonan said.

Engagement with local communities will be a large part of the employment and training aspects of the new business. To support this goal Doorn-Djil will open offices in both Newman and Kununurra.

This stand-alone business will be backed by the expertise and resources of Macmahon, which is currently experiencing record growth and has an order book of approximately $2 billion.

The Board of the new company is currently being formed and one of the first directors to be appointed is prominent Aboriginal community leader Oral McGuire.

A long-term champion of Aboriginal employment, Mr McGuire said Doorn-Djil Yoordaning’s results will depend on how the new company addresses the social and cultural issues faced by Aboriginal workers.

"The key will be Doorn Djil Yoordaning's capacity to accommodate a range of pressures without compromising the commercial success of the business," Mr McGuire said.

Doorn-Djil Yoordaning Mining and Construction was unveiled at a breakfast function in Perth, attended by more than 50 community and industry leaders including the Western Australian Minister for Housing and Works; Indigenous Affairs; Heritage; Land Information; The Hon Michelle Roberts and the Member for Kimberley, Mrs Carol Martin MLA.

The business is expected to be fully operational in August, 2008.
